Vocational Teachers’ Skills in Focus

28th May at 15-16.30

Organiser: All five Vocational Teacher Education Colleges in Finland
Language: English
Target group: Vocational teachers
Chairperson/Contact: Dr Leena Kaikkonen, leena.kaikkonen@jypoly.fi

This session highlights the Finnish vocational education system from the point of view of vocational teachers’ skills. In order to provide high level learning, vocational teachers are expected to be experts in their own professional field. Additionally, they are required to be proficient pedagogues to encourage students individually in their learning and to construct authentic learning environments to promote growth of skilful professionals.  Furthermore, there are strong expectations for teachers to network and cooperate in diverse levels with colleagues, work-life and other stakeholders. The session provides some perspectives on these issues and also on vocational teacher education, facing the challenge to enable growth of such expertise.

PROGRAMME:

15.00  Presenting Finnish Vocational Teacher Education
Ms. Leena Kaikkonen, Head of R&D, Vocational Teacher Education College of Jyväskylä Polytechnic

Teachers’ skills as professionals and experts in vocational pedagogy are of great importance when training skilful workers for the future. 15.30 Development of vocational teachership
Ms. Säde-Pirkko Nissilä, Principal Lecturer, Vocational Teacher Education College of Oulu Polytechnic

Nowadays vocational teachers work in a climate of dynamic change which affects the conditions of their professional practice. To cope with the problems and challenges of their work they need tools that have an impact on their action, thinking and values. As life-long learners they need reflective skills to guide their development both as individuals and members of communities.

15.50 eLearning in Vocational Teacher Education
Hanne Koli, Lecturer, Vocational Teacher Education College of Häme Polytechnic

Vocational teacher training institutes develop strategies for the educational use of ICT. The objective is to provide all teacher students with skills in the educational use of ICT and to raise the level of national information technology know-how. The networking society and economy needs new ways of organising education. A key factor is the implementation of new, interactive teaching and study methods developing the use of eLearning in education. In an open learning environment, learning is active and communal and utilises a variety of media. Openness is also linked to the opportunity for networking in learning situations, the mobility of learners, and partial independence of time and place. Teacher education units are also developing teaching practice from the viewpoint of eLearning and investing in the development of pedagogic innovations in information and communication technologies.

16.10 One development project in Vocational teacher studies
Mr. Alex Kostov, Teacher student, Helia School of Vocational Teacher education

One aim and objective of vocational teacher education is to give teachers knowledge and skills to develop their own work and institution. In their studies students are encouraged to make a special developmental project in real environment in the area of vocational education. E-learning project in the field of tourism education between Russia and Finland is one example of these developmental projects.
