27 Jewellery Jewellers fashion beautiful and durable jewellery out of precious metals for different types of customers. Competitors must be able work economically whilst maintaining quality. They are well organised and have plenty of initiative. Using the correct equipment and maintaining work safety is important. The competition project will include one practical task in which the competitor will make a piece of jewellery from yellow gold without polishing or setting gemstones. The only metal used will be gold. The time allocated for the project will be 22 hours spread over four days. A day before the event, the competitors will get the chance to see the working area and find out more about the competition and the assessment criteria. The maximum points will be allocated as follows: Overall appearance | 25 points | Cutting | 17 points | Soldering | 20 points | Finishing | 10 points | Use of materials | 2 points | Measurements | 18 points | Level of completeness | 8 points |
The panel of judges will include specialists within their field, led by a top expert. The competition project for 2005 was selected at the previous WorldSkills event. This will be changed by over 30% prior to the competition. Competitors will be sent samples of the gold solders three months prior to the event. Competitors will fashion a golden pendant with complex wire settings. The task will also cover challenging solders and settings. The competitors usually hold a vocational qualification, and some have been working for several years.
