Abilympics will be held in connection with WorldSkills

The seventh international Abilympics will be held in connection with the WorldSkills competition in Japan in year 2007. The International Abilympics was held first time in year 1981. The aim of the competition is to decrease prejudices related to persons with disabilities and to promote society with equal rights and chances.

Anna-Maria Urhonen, The Youth Secretary of Kynnys ry, an association for persons with disabilities thinks that The Abilympics creates awareness about the abilities of persons with disabilities. “The aim is to show that a person with disabilities is able to do things and can be as professional as the rest of the people.”

In addition to dissolving prejudices the event acts as a co-operation forum for industry and associations for persons with disabilities. In the previous Abilympics held in India in 2003 there were over 400 participants from 34 different countries competing in 43 different skills. The skills included graphical design, floristry, ladies’ dressmaking and carpentry. The Abilympics in Japan are believed to be the biggest vocational competition ever arranged for persons with disabilities.
