Programming as a team
Before the run

The path for the final Swiss Mechatronics team was long and turbulent. It all started on the 8th of May 2002,
when 15 young contestants (17-19 years) met at the premises of SWISSMEM (National office responsible for the development of this trade) in Winterthur, a suburb of Zurich for the preliminary competition. These young men were here to show they had what it
takes to become the team members. Only 12 were eligible to take part at the national competition to take place
at the premises of Festo headquarters on June 24th -26th
On day one, the participants were to mount the MPS (Modular Production System) stations "distributing" and "testing". On day two, the participants were then assigned in groups of two, where they then had to work on different assignments as a team. In the afternoon, it was time to see if the participants were also in good physical condition. This was done by means of a 12 minute run. On day three, the teams where mixed up again according to special criteria, and then resolved further assignments together. During all three days in between assignments, the participants underwent stress tests, and a psychological profile was created by means of a questionnaire. At the end of the last day, one could see on the smiles in their faces that the events in the past days had made a winner out of each and everyone of them. But, only one team can win the gold medal. The end of the National competition, did not mean that the winning participants "had it made". The gold and silver Team then competed on two occasions in shopping centres. The reason for this, was to find out how these gentlemen react under pressure and, to make sure that we get the best team going for St. Gallen in June 2003. In December 2002, the decision was final. Martin Kuriger from Polytype AG in Fribourg, and Patrik Reichmuth from MSW (Metallarbeiterschule) in Winterthur are the fine young men to represent Switzerland at the Worldskills competition 2003 in St. Gallen.
