Our selection process begins by sending out invitations to all schools and companies in the area of automation to do a test via the Internet. This tests their  knowledge in facts, programming, faultfinding and troubleshooting. The test also includes some questions checking logical thinking and problem analysis.

Participants

Approximately 240 people complete the test by spending 3 hours in front of a computer (completed by 6 February 2002).

The top 12 are invited to a 2 day long semi-final (7 & 8th May 2002). This competition included practical exercises in assembling, programming and troubleshooting.

The top 6 from the semi-final go to our National Competition in September. Participants are given some idea of what to expect. For example, they know that there will be some programming with Festo Software FST and some hardware from from P&L.

The National Competition is held at the same time and location as the STCC Final in Mantorp. This is a big event - it is a race-track in the middle of southern Sweden - expecting approximately 30,000 visitors on the weekend 14 & 15  September.

Mechatronics will have 200 square metres of the 1000 squaremetres allocated to Trades. In addition to the competition area, there will be demonstrations aimed at enticing visitors to choose a career in Mechatronics and other trades of the future.

Robots working in tandem/teamwork will be on display - encouraging people to visit the competition area. Cameras and beamers will project the action to big screens and visitors will be given information literature.

More information will be provided as the competition gets nearer.

Organisation

The organisation behind our selections and finals is a combination and co-ordination of Trade associations, Swedish Companies, (Festo Sweden and P&L Nordic AB), and a group of 4 teachers.

"How should I do this???"

The final ended with a surprise competition - to repair a pneumatic cylinder. The participants were timed.

The winners in the final - Benny Andersson and Erik Bogg. Benny and Erik are Team Sweden in St Gallen.

WorldSkills Competition - St Gallen 2003

After the National Competition, the team will now train to fight for gold in St. Gallen.

The participants attend a total of 14 days preparation, apart from working their regular jobs or attending school. These 14 days are spent fine tuning the skills and learning to work together on the Festo equipment.
