Volunteer Updates

June 11, 2009:

Our volunteer numbers are growing and so has our staff. With seven full time staff working on our volunteer program, things are really starting to heat up. Some of our Operations Volunteers (primarily setup and tear-down) have been entered and scheduled already. Soon we will begin scheduling our Event Volunteers (Hosting, Education Program and Information Services), so stay tuned and expect to be contacted soon about your specific position and schedule.

Our volunteer recognition program is beginning to have a clear shape. We've done an initial uniform order and are have narrowed down the location of our exciting Wrap-Up party. We've also received some ideas and begun planning our Volunteer Welcome Kit!

Volunteer Recognition

WorldSkills Calgary 2009 has committed to being the best WorldSkills Competition ever. One part of being the best means having a fantastic volunteer recognition program. We are excited to offer the following events free of charge to our volunteers.

Thursday July 16th - WorldSkills Night at Vipers Stadium
On July 16th at 7:00pm the Calgary Vipers will be taking on Chico Outlaws at Vipers Stadium and we want volunteers to be there. We have 500 complementary tickets up for grabs on a first come first serve basis. Our next update will provide you with more information on how to claim your tickets!

Volunteer Lead Positions
The week of June 15, volunteers will receive an email outlining some of "Lead" positions for WorldSkills Calgary 2009. These will be in a variety of areas and will generally be 4-day to 7-day commitments. More often than not, there will be a team of 10 volunteers rotating on a daily basis that the Volunteer Lead will train and organize. So stay tuned...

Mascots Needed
We are still looking to put together a pool of people who are willing to be Tug and Tess on the odd occasion. If this is something that interests you, but you aren't sure if you want to commit to it full time, we have two upcoming events that you can give mascoting a try. On June 20th we'll be at the Village Square Leisure Centre and on July 9th we'll attend the Stampede Breakfast at Southland Leisure Centre. If either of these interests you (or someone you know!) send an email to volunteer@worldskills2009.com.

Summer Events
We'll be attending many of the exciting events throughout the City of Calgary this summer and encourage you to come by and say hello! If you are involved with any events and would be interested in having a WorldSkills Calgary 2009 presence, let us know! Our confirmed events thus far are:
Canada Day in Prince's Island Park - July 1st
Calgary FolkFest - July 23-26 - Prince's Island Park

Specific Positions Still Required

At this stage we are accepting applications for some specific volunteer positions. Please read the short descriptions below and the job descriptions that are attached and send an email to volunteer@worldskills2009.com if any of these positions interest you.

Team Hosts - Team Hosts will work with a team in helping orient them to Calgary, SAIT and Stampede Park. As a friendly and outgoing person, you liaison with the country's Team Leader prior to their arrival, greet them at the airport and assist them throughout their time in Calgary.

Competitions Administrative Assistant - Working inside one of the skill competitions, the Competitions Administrative Assistant will help the Judges and Experts with paperwork, photocopying, data entry and other tasks as required. Attention to detail and the ability to work in a stressful environment are must for these people.

Other Skills News
Skills Provincials - Our volunteer staff recently attended the Provincial Skills Competition held in Edmonton May 13th and 14th. We helped with the setup and then spent some time observing the competition. For many of the team it was the first time we had seen a Skills competition in person and helped to reinforce the importance of the Skills movement.

Canadian National Skills Competition - Our volunteer director attended this year's event in Charlottetown, PEI from May 20th to 23rd. These were held at the Charlottetown Civic Centre and the Holland College's Tourism and Culinary Centre. This year there were 40 events and over 500 competitors. One of the highlights of the event was the introduction of Canada's team for WorldSkills Calgary 2009. These representatives all competed at the 2008 national competition and are gearing up for this September.
