Wall and Floor Tiling

Ceramic tiles have been made by people for 4000 years and modern tiles are used on surfaces in all types of construction work.

Tiles are used to decorate, enhance and protect finished buildings and come in many different materials such as terracotta, stone and marble, as well as ceramics.

Tilers have to choose or advise upon the most appropriate material for the particular job. Professional tilers also have to calculate the amount of tiles needed for the surface, cut them to size and shape, execute complicated patterns and use the appropriate adhesives.

Tiling is an intricate and highly skilled profession and tilers work in many different environments, from large commercial projects to tiling swimming pools and bathrooms.

Fast Facts

The use of floor and wall tiles dates back for thousands of years. Examples of their use throughout history can be found everywhere, from the pyramids in Egypt and mosques in the Middle East to the Roman villas in England.
