Fashion technology is the applied art of designing, planning and creating new clothing and accessories.

Those who specialise in fashion technology are usually called fashion designers. To succeed in this competitive industry, a good understanding of fabrics and colours is essential. Fashion designers also need creativity and technical skills in needlework, design and patternmaking.

Commercial judgement and knowledge is also important as many designers are self employed and need to understand how to promote and sell their products. If not self employed, fashion designers usually work in-house, supervising a design team at a fashion company.
