THE NORTH

The Northern part of Brazil is a popular destination for ecotourists. The region, with a rather hot and humid climate, covers much of the Amazon Rainforest, the largest tropical forest in the world. Among the primary highlights is adventure tourism, which offers a number of itineraries with hiking trails, rapids, waterfalls, sea beaches and from the river, fishing and boating down the Amazon River and its tributaries.

It's annually home to one of the largest popular festivals in Brazil, the Parintins Festival. Held in the historic city of Parintins in the state of Amazonas, the event is a competition between two folkloric associations through dance, music, plays and allegories. Another significant tourist attraction is the Encontro das Águas (Meeting of the Waters), the confluence between the Negro and Solimões rivers. The phenomenon, which can be seen in the Janauari Ecological Park, calls attention to the colour variation of river water, which are slow to mix because they have different temperatures and density.

Its gastronomy is defined by dishes influenced by the indigenous cuisine based on fresh water fish, roots, seeds, leaves and typical fruits of the Amazon. The acai berry, nuts, guarana, jambu and cassava derivatives are especially prized by tourists seeking exotic flavours.
