THE NORTHEAST
Sunny nearly every day of the year, the Northeast is a preferred destination for Brazilian tourists and foreigners visiting the country in the summer. The immense coastline has calm and warm beaches as well as surf beaches that attract surfers from around the world. The region boasts landscapes classified among the most beautiful in the world, among them are Pipa (RN), Porto Seguro and Morro de São Paulo (BA), Jericoacoara (EC), Maragogi (AL), and the island of Fernando de Noronha and Porto de Galinhas (PE).
The region has dunes, cliffs, reefs and tide pools that offer different scenery and sightseeing possibilities. The National Park of Lençóis Maranhenses (MA) is notable for bringing together, in one place, mangroves, rivers and bluish lakes spread across 90,000 acres of dunes.
During Carnival, a period in which the country expects to receive 6.4 million tourists in 2014, the Northeast has festivals all along the coast, especially in Salvador (BA), Olinda and Recife (PE). In June, the region is marked by the São João celebrations, with folk dances and mouth-watering culinary delicacies, with typical sweets like hominy, coconut candy and rice pudding, plus a variety of dishes based on corn, such as pamonha, curau and couscous.
Over the rest of the year, the Northeastern cuisine draws visitors for its creative and rich range of flavours. Coconut, palm oil, cassava and a variety of peppers spice dishes based on seafood and beef jerky. Among the highlights are the baião de dois (a mixture of beans, rice and dried meat) and the traditional dishes of Bahian cuisine, such as vatapá, caruru and acarajé.
