How do you prepare for the WorldSkills Competition, are there any special training methods?
We do have 2 preparation weekends with our competitors and experts to build the team prior to the actual competition. These preparation meetings cover all sorts of different aspects. Basic logistical information as well as special training for topics like: ‘How to present yourself and your team during an media interview’.
Team building is definitely the main focus of our meetings.
Are there any skills that require special training or preparation to compete at the international level?
To be able to compete at an international level all skills require special training or preparation. Each skill has its own specialties and ‘skill sets’ so the training has to cover many aspects. It’s not only the training for the skill itself. E.g. every training should include what we call ‘situational/mental training’. Like ‘How do I handle stressful situations’, ‘How am I able to concentrate while thousands of people are watching me’,…
What are some of the challenges that you have to deal with during the training, preparation and Competition?
The range of possible challenges is infinite. From missing to broken tools to feeling sick, nervousness, home sickness (maybe not this year), organizational changes, keeping the group together, make sure that everybody has the necessary information, setting up meetings, and so on.
How do you anticipate that your Competitors will do at the WorldSkills Competition in terms of medals and placement?
That’s a tough question. We don’t anticipate anything (sure – everybody loves medals).
We just want our competitors to perform at the highest level possible for them. If the competition is over and the competitors are happy with the work they’ve done and how they performed during the competition days – we as Teamleaders are happy too. Everybody should keep in mind that as a competitor of WorldSkills they actually achieved something only a few people will ever achieve in their live. WorldSkills is a once in a lifetime experience. And if that results in a medal or a Certificate of Excellence – perfect. If somebody did a better job – Congrats.
